Teaching

I feel passionately about the craft of writing, it intrigues and absorbs me — how changing a word here creates an effect there; the different stresses and inflections it is possible to achieve; the way to make a character breathe with life; to make a plot shift in a way that causes of vertigo in your reader — I can’t get enough of it. Over the years I’ve tried to communicate my fascination through teaching and have taught creative writing at Bristol, Cardiff and Warwick Universities. One of my groups has been going since 1992 - testament to a shared enthrallment.
The delight of writing lies in unravelling the knotty parts for yourself, but over the years I have learnt that a few simple rules do hold true and can provide a useful foundation on which your imagination can start to work. To find out what these are, knock at the door and discover what lies within….
