I’ve finished The Book Thief so I’m feeling rather virtuous, although it took me much longer than it should have done. I’m a slow reader when I’m not enjoying myself and I can end up resenting the book in question for keeping me from better things. I’m not very good at not finishing - I just grind to a halt instead.

At the moment I’m reading The Girl who Played with Fire, which is the second part of Steig Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy and does pretty much what it says on the tin - it’s thrilling and something to romp through quickly without  touching the sides. My sister lent it to me and it is an ideal holiday read. What I’m really looking forward to is Lorrie Moore’s new novel A Gate at the Stairs. She is one of my writerly heroines - her prose skips and flips and dances and I love her and so does my brother who first introduced me to her, so thank you Tom.

My reading group has chosen JG Ballard’s The Atrocity Exhibition as our next book, so that will soon be joining the pile on my bedside table - so much to read, so little time.
